Matthew Fugate is that rare straight stylist capable of picking up what you’re putting down when you leap into his chair, spouting out visions of a Valley of the Dolls follicular moment. The mane man moved to Manhattan five years ago, after being recruited by stylist to the stars, Sally Hershberger. He’s since done hair looks for New York Fashion Week and tended to the famed ‘dos of Blake Lively, Claire Danes, and Brooke Shields. Fugate is known for his beguiling blow-outs and cute cuts that actually make hair look longer than it was when you walked in. Here, we caught up with the stylist about the best holiday hairstyles.

ELLE: Back-combing can be intimidating,シャネル アウトレット. What are the best ways to create a trendy bouffant look?

Matthew Fugate: Make sure to keep a small section of hair out above your back-combed area so you can place it over the volume for instant smoothness. This helps you avoid a messy, undone feel. To keep it all in place, I like OriginalMineral Original Queenie Firm Hold Hairspray.

ELLE: Let’s talk accessories. What are some ways to sport a headband for a chic holiday look?

MF: Wear the headband a day or so after your blow-out, when your roots are getting flat, but your ends still have movement. For a nighttime ‘do, flip hair over and spray it with texturizing spray, put your headband on (while you’re still upside down), then gather all of your hair up into a messy bun at the crown. Secure with pins to put a modern spin on a classic Brigitte Bardot look.

ELLE: What are some tips for achieving a straight, sleek, flat-ironed look without sacrificing too much volume or damaging ends?

MF: Begin by blow-drying hair upside down, and use a large round brush only on top of the head and crown to give your roots lift. Then,シャネル財布 新作, mist hair with a thermal protector. Go over the hair with the flat iron set on low heat from the middle to the ends only. If the iron is too hot, the result is a lifeless look. Finally, mist hair with a shine spray from arms-length away to avoid over-application. Use argan oil as a final touch or wrap the bottom inch of hair around a low-heated curling iron to add movement and to disguise frayed ends.

ELLE: What updo would you recommend to hair novices?

MF: The low, one-sided chignon is simple to pull off yourself. Just gather hair into a low side-ponytail and secure it with a band, then wrap the ponytail around the band and secure with pins. If your hair is fine, back-comb the ponytail before wrapping to give it some guts. Want chignon options? Throw a spin on your style by adding a heavy side-part, or add a braid to one side of the part. Then,GUCCI【グッチ】, gather rest of your hair into low side-ponytail, braid the pony, and twist it up around the band. Secure it with pins.

ELLE: What are some tips for creating a party-ready, pretty ponytail?

MF: Let it be a bit dirty first; that’ll help with shine. Then, gather the hair from the place that best flatters your jawline and secure with something other than a band—a red ribbon is fun for the holidays. You can also opt for leather and twine to secure your look.

ELLE: If we’re going for a more simple effect, how can we achieve a salon-perfect blowout with volume at home?

MF: Towel-dry your hair being careful not to rough up the cuticle, then apply volumizer and rough-dry hair upside down. Once it’s 75 percent dry, smooth it with a round brush while pointing your blow-dryer nozzle down for glossy gleam.

ELLE: How about half-up ‘dos?

MF: Less hair pulled back is more! When you gather too much hair, you run the risk of having it fall out, which looks unkempt.
