Beauty Chat: Gregory Alan on Instant Hair Makeover Tips

The instant that ball drops in Times Square in all its Waterford Crystal glory, it’s all about plotting hair makeovers. And so starts consultations on everything from color to texture and cut, because looking the way you did in your holiday photos is so 2012. To get you started, we caught up with NYC-based celebrity hairstylist Gregory Alan, who’s tended to the manes of Rebecca Romijn and Charlotte Ronson. He offered up some easy tips and tricks to shift your hue, shape,グッチ バッグ アウトレット, length, and style in a flash.
ELLE: Clip-in bangs are an easy way to change up your look and are ideal for the commitment-phobic. What are some tips to choosing the right ones and seamless application?
Gregory Alan: When shopping for clip-in bangs, make sure the color matches your hair, that you choose human hair instead of synthetic, and that you can iron the hair on low heat, which helps aid with styling. To apply, start with your natural part, and brush your hair behind your ears. Make a small triangle section of hair where your bangs will go, and clip the bangs into place. If you have any baby hairs or short fringe already, simply spray them with hairspray and secure them with bobby pins under the clip-in bangs to create a smooth finish.
ELLE: How can straight-haired women incorporate some texture?
GA: To bulk up your texture, simply apply some mousse, like Salon Grafix Shaping Mousse, from your scalp to your ends and blow-dry. Section your hair into medium-sized pieces and braid, securing the ends with elastics. Next, take your flatiron and go over each braid once or twice. Allow hair to cool before removing the elastics. You can also achieve the same effect by sleeping in the braids overnight and removing them the next morning to give pin-straight locks instant waves.
ELLE: For those with curly hair who want to go straight, how can they best achieve optimum sleekness?
GA: The most important step is choosing the right products, using your styling tools correctly, and having a little bit of patience! Pat hair dry with a towel and spray on a heat protectant, like TIGI Bed Head Control Freak Extra Straight. Separate your hair into large sections, using a paddle brush, and blow-dry each until smooth. ELLE: If those with straight hair aren’t ready to go full-on curly, what are some tips to nailing loose beachy waves?
GA: Beachy waves are a staple look year-round, because they’re fun, undone and carefree. Create waves in your hair by using a one-inch curling iron and curl hair away from your face. To finish this look, use Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray and scrunch hair. Make sure when you use this product to mist from a distance. ELLE: Sometimes a night out calls for a more polished look. How can we achieve retro waves to recall old Hollywood glamour?
GA: This style looks best on women with medium to short hair. To start, create a clean and deep side part, then take hair and curl with a one-inch curling iron and “set” each curl using long metal clips. Allow hair to cool. When finished, remove clips and spray a bristle brush, like the Mason Pearson brush, with hairspray and blend the curls together for a Veronica Lake style. Set ends with a cream for a flawless effect.
ELLE: Regarding color makeovers, what should we keep in mind when going blonde, brunette or red?
GA: When choosing a blonde, think of your eye color and skin pigment. Going blonde can give you a sun-kissed look or can completely wash you out. I always love a mix of dimension by adding in warm tones that give light and life to your hair. When going brunette, think of the season and go with warmer tones for the colder months and cooler tones for the summer. Also, take in to account your wardrobe and eye color. Your hair will be a staple for all your fashion choices. As for redheads, take note if you are not a natural ginger; red fades quickly from the hair. Always use a color depositing shampoo specially made for redheads to lock in your color for extra shine and protection.
ELLE: What’s a quick, easy updo anyone can do to update her look?
GA: I like the tousled pony-bun. Simply wave your hair with a one-inch curling iron, spray roots with Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray and then tease the roots. Direct hair to one side and pull it back into a low ponytail. Create a messy tousled bun and spritz with a light hold hairspray for added shine and hold. Top it off with a jeweled headband.
